Titanic Challenge Retired
At approximately 07:45 yesterday Monday 3rd December Titanic Challenge issued a Mayday call over the VHF on channel 16 to say that they had a man over board situation. This message was relayed by Margaret Bowling on Atlantic Jack and picked up by Support Yacht 1 who immediately diverted course to attend the incident (VHF range is very restricted and can only be picked up within line of sight so well done to Margaret for remembering her training!). After further investigation it was discovered that Andrew Lothian had been washed overboard by a large wave – he was wearing a lifejacket but unfortunately was not tied on to the boat. Andrew was recovered by his own vessel after spending approximately 40 minutes in the water.
Support Yacht 1 arrived on the scene within approximately 4 hours by which time Andrew was back on board and in dry clothes, but was obviously shaken by his traumatic experience. Andrew and Jim then made the heart breaking decision not to continue in the race and accepted a tow from Support Yacht 1 into Puerto de la Estaca, El Hierro.
Jim Hook commented:
‘we are both very disappointed that we will not be continuing but after much discussion we feel that it is the right decision. We are both safe, that’s the main thing.’
